Historical Pushkarni of Bhukum Village
Hello friends, today we are going to learn about the historical Pushkarni (stepwell) from Mulshi Taluka.
Bhugaon and Bhukum villages are known as the gateways to Mulshi Taluka. At the end of Bhukum village, there is a temple of Lord Hanuman. A beautiful stream flows beside the village.
Adjacent to this stream, you will find a Pushkarni in the shape of a Shivalinga. This Pushkarni, approximately 18 feet wide and 32 feet long, is the only one of its kind in Mulshi Taluka.
Let’s first understand what a Pushkarni is. It is a well with steps leading down to the water level. In ancient times, this method of building wells was common. The first such well was built in Pushkar, Rajasthan, and that is how this type of well got its name.
The Pushkarni in Bhukum village has 11 steps leading down, and inside, there is a small shrine (Devli). Inside the shrine, there is a deity called Maulai Devi. In the middle of the Pushkarni, there is also a “Gomukh” (cow’s mouth-shaped water spout). Looking at this Pushkarni, it is estimated to be around 250 to 300 years old.
Ahilyabai Holkar, the daughter-in-law of Malharrao Holkar, built many temples and Pushkarnis. It is believed that this Pushkarni is also from her time. However, no further historical information is available about it.
If you know anything more about this, please let us know.
Thank you,
