Jewels of Mulshi’s Beauty: “Shravan Special” Ambeshwar Mahadev Temple, Ambegaon

Greetings, friends! Today, we will learn about the historic Ambeshwar Mahadev Temple located in Mulshi Taluka. Situated near the village of Uravade on the Pune-Lavasa road, Ambegaon is about one kilometer inside after a fork in the road that leads to Marnewadi. In this village of Ambegaon, you can visit the temple of Shambhu Mahadev.

The Ambeshwar temple, displaying many signs of the Chalukya style of architecture, appears to have been a large temple in ancient times. The stone frames of the temple, along with many other stone slabs, have been carefully placed by the renovators, maintaining its original state. Although the temple was built in the 16th or 17th century, remnants of the Chalukya period are visible in various parts of the structure. This suggests that the temple, which was likely destroyed in later periods, has been restored.

The temple is located in a beautiful, naturally picturesque setting. Surrounded by hills on three sides, a stream flowing nearby, and lush paddy fields, this ancient temple of Lord Shambhu Mahadev stands in a location that captivates everyone with its natural beauty.

Upon entering the temple premises, you will see the tombs of five unknown brave men from the Marne family. It is said that these tombs belong to the sardar (chieftains) of the Marne family, according to their descendants. Near the stream, there is a broken Shiva lingam. Before entering the east-facing temple, your attention is drawn to the dilapidated Nandi idol. The entrance to the temple is small, and you’ll notice intricately carved pillars and dwarpal (guard) statues at the doorway. The Ganesha figure carved on the lintel above the door is very delicately designed and looks stunning.

To enter the temple, you need to bow down as the entrance is quite low. Once inside, you are greeted by a grand assembly hall. The temple’s spire is small but resembles a dome from the inside. The intricately carved Ashtadikpal (guardians of the eight directions) on the ceiling are mesmerizing. Various flowers are carved inside the assembly hall, and to allow airflow, ornate jharokhas (windows) are positioned on both sides. Beautiful statues of Ganesha are carved on both sides of the front wall, and there is a statue of Vishnu depicted as a dwarpal (guardian). Four ornate pillars in the assembly hall enhance its beauty. On the entrance to the sanctum sanctorum, you’ll see the image of Kirtimukha, and once you enter, a beautifully installed Shiva lingam greets you. The atmosphere in the sanctum is extremely peaceful, and after the darshan (sacred viewing), one feels very content.

Temple History: When you ask the local residents about the temple, they often say it is from the time of the Pandavas. However, the temple’s architectural style clearly indicates that it belongs to the Chalukya period. The temple is built on a high platform, with large stones used for its foundation. This temple dates back to the 11th century A.D., during the reign of the Chalukyas of Kalyani. Every year, the Mahashivaratri festival is celebrated here, and devotees from nearby areas visit in large numbers. You should also definitely visit this Chalukya-period Ambeshwar Mahadev Temple.
